THE FOLLOWING EPISODE 14: “THE END IS NEAR” REVIEW
By: Nick Kelley
“And darkness and decay and the Red Death held illimitable dominion over all.” The Masque of the Red Deathby Edgar Allan Poe.
As we see in this episode, Joe Carroll (James Purefoy) is slowly starting to unravel as he, his cult, and the kidnapped Claire (Natalie Zea), put the first step of their escape plan in action taking Ryan Hardy (Kevin Bacon), Michael Weston (Shawn Ashmore), Debra Parker (Annie Parisse), and the rest of the F.B.I. in a chaotic frenzy as the cult members cause havoc and mayhem throughout the town of Havenport as well as a evacuation center set up to protect the towns people much like in “The Masque Of Red Death” but death found them anyways…It’s all about metaphors people.
Meanwhile with the town tightly locked down, Joe, Emma (Valorie Curry), and Jacob (Nico Tortorella), take a couple hostage during a home invasion and while they lay low waiting for nightfall so they can make an escape. There you see Jacob slowly coming to the reality now that Joe’s mask is slipping and he sees what lies underneath.
We are also briefly introduced to one of Carroll’s cult members who goes by the name of “Annabel Lee” (a poem by Edgar Allan Poe), who after killing a news reporter delivers a message to Ryan that in death there is life. That Claire must die and through her death Ryan will be reborn.
This episode also leaves us in anticipation of next weeks finale with Emma killing Jacob by Sweeney Todding him, what’s going to happen to Claire, and last but certainly not least Agent Parker being buried alive!
