THERE’S ROYALTY IN THE HOUSE
We all saw it coming 5 episodes ago, but…
After the reveal on Supergirl season 2 episode 15 that the people hunting Mon-El (Chris Wood) are royal aliens, his past is called into question and we’re left wondering: who is Mon-El? Who is this person that unexpectedly fell to Earth and wormed his way into Kara’s (Melissa Benoist) life, becoming her partner and her boyfriend? He told his “story,” but how much of that was a lie? Why and how was Mon-El the sole survivor of Daxam’s destruction when Krypton was destroyed?
Why was Mon-El the one who escaped Daxam’s destruction? The story he told earlier in the season was sketchy, and now we know he’s being hunted by intergalactic royals — presumably the King and Queen of Daxam?
The trailer for season 2 episode 16, which airs March 20, reveals that Mon-El is, in fact, the Prince of Daxam, which calls into question just about everything he’s done this season. Why lie? Why did he lie to Kara about his descent when he first landed on Earth? It makes much more sense now that Mon-El is the Prince of Daxam; after all, why would a random guard be the sole survivor and escape on the last Kryptonian pod? Let’s not forget who is Kevin Sorbo?
Mon-El and Kara
As Kara says in the trailer, “this changes everything”. Not just for who we think his character is, but for his relationship with Kara. Had she known he was the Prince, she probably never would have gotten involved with him. She’d heard stories of the Daxamite Prince, and they were less than favorable.
With his family returning, what lengths will they go to before Mon-El is forced to leave Earth, or die trying? Kara’s loyalties will be tested, and her bond with Mon-El will either strengthen after learning who he truly is, or their relationship will be shattered forever with no chance of revival. It’s no surprise that he’s the Prince; fans have suspected that his story of surviving the destruction of his planet was fake, and now it’s just confirmed. The consequences for his betrayal will not go over lightly with Kara, who so heavily depends on honestly and loyalty from those in her life.
Where will this take Mon-El, and what role will his parents play overall? He must be hiding something, other than just being the Prince. Maybe he saw landing on Earth as a chance for a fresh start, or to escape from his title, or maybe it was just a chance to become someone else. He’s always been judged by the actions of his past, and perhaps landing on Earth seemed like a chance to not act like an entitled, privileged guy, but to be “normal.”
It’s likely Mon-El has a dark secret in his past that he’s keeping from Kara, and that’s going to break her heart. What do you think? Is Mon-El hiding more than just his title? Let us know in the comments below!
