“Lord of the Rings: Gollum” Video Game Will Be Coming To Next Gen

From developer Daedalic Entertainment comes a video game centered around one of the most important characters to Tolkien‘s universe, Gollum. The corrupted halfling who found the one ring, will be getting his own video game and yes it will be coming to next gen consoles.

Set in a time period before “The Hobbit” but after the fall of the second dark-lord Sauron, this game will take place in the time that our dear friend Smeagol is in possession of the ring.

Carsten Fichtelmann, Daedalic’s CEO, explained:

You already have that big conflict in the character, two voices talking to you continuously, which means there is a good reason there are decisions to make in the game: the Smeagol decisions or the Gollum decision. We have the story that we all know from the book, but everything that happens to him before he appears in the book are the main things we will see in our game. We will tell the story before he first appears in the books.

Envisioned as a long-story format with diverging narratives, similar to the games “Until Dawn”, “Detroit: Become Human“, and “Black Mirror: Bandersnatch“, “Lord of the Rings: Gollum” will have you making choices and exploring the inner workings of the mind of the creature they call Gollum.

According to Fichtelmann, this will be the first of many games set within Middle-Earth and Tolkien’s universe, and he even stated,
it was clear that the Tolkien estate looked for a company that was capable of doing something which is more story-orientated than some of the other products that came out over the last years.” This is an obvious stab at the “Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor” series, which although great games that are fun to play, are not canon to Tolkien’s vision and contradict alot of what is in the books, while opting to choose action and adventure over story-telling.

I am quite excited to see where this game goes, seeing as Gollum is my favorite character from Tolkien’s series. A creature torn apart by corruption to the point where he believes he is nothing without the One Ring that had been causing him harm for so many years. He is the example of why you should fear the ring and he is the purest example of what it can do to a creature.
