Hank Azaria Will No Longer Be Playing Apu On The Simpsons

Amazing voice over artist and actor Hank Azaria will no longer be providing the voice work for Apu on “The Simpsons“. After 30 seasons as the character and years and years of complaints from some fans, Apu will be going through some changes, as to what those changes are, even the producers of the show do not know yet.

Fans have taken issue with Apu and the fact that the character is “a walking stereotype”. Being the host to a bunch of Southern Asian and Indian stereotypes, have irked fans of the show for a long time and it seems now the producers of the show are doing something about it. Although, Hank Azaria didn’t comment on what they will be doing with the character as of yet.

Hank Azaria commented on the matter to /Film, “All we know there is I won’t be doing the voice anymore, unless there’s some way to transition it or something.”

What they’re going to do with the character is their call. It’s up to them and they haven’t sorted it out yet. All we’ve agreed on is I won’t do the voice anymore.”

Hank stated, “We all made the decision together. We all agreed on it. We all feel like it’s the right thing and good about it.

The outrage towards the character has been a thing for years, yet it hit a outstanding peak with the release of Hari Kondabolu‘s documentary The Problem with Apu“. This started the questions asked to the creators of the show regarding the character. The closest the show has been to answering fans questions or commenting on the issues fans have, was in a 2018 episode where Lisa and Marge discussed insensitive depictions of characters no longer being okay on television. Yet, this discussion left many fans upset because they didn’t touch upon Apu at all during the discussion.

For so long Hank Azaria stated he would walk away from the character, it just seems that now is the time it will be actually happening.
