Francis Ford Coppola Calls Marvel Films “Despicable”

The legendary director known for the likes of “The Godfather“, Francis Ford Coppola, recently pitched in on the discussion as to whether or not Marvel films are considered cinema. Following in the footsteps of another all time great, Martin Scorsese, Coppola agrees that the products that Disney is constantly shoveling out every other month is not cinema.

Starting only a couple weeks ago, the conversation/debate as to whether or not Marvel films are cinema began with Martin Scorsese, academy award winning director, stating that the films are not cinema, and ever since then he has defended his stance on the debate. People affiliated with these films stated their feelings on the topic and have come to defend their franchise, such as the likes of Samuel L. Jackson, James Gunn, Joss Whedon, and Robert Downey Jr. Now, fellow academy award winning director, Francis Ford Coppola, states his opinion, saying that Marvel films are “despicable”.

Francis even stated that in order for a film to be a cinema you have to learn something, you have to get something out of your viewing experience, and doubles down on this sentiment by stating “I don’t know if anyone gets anything out of seeing the same movie over and over again.

These two directors believe that the film industry needs more single narrative story telling and viewing experiences, and that the MCU movies lack this and rely upon other films to tell a complete story and all standalone films tell nearly the same story, lacking any real diversity.

Do you believe and/or agree with these legendary members of the film industry? Or do you think that these are just old men that need to change with the times? Let us know in the comments down below or on social media accounts.
