Who doesn’t love Mark Pellegrino…he has been a star of the silver and small screens for three decades now, in such movies asThe Big Lebowski’ and ‘Lethal Weapon 3’. In the last decade alone, he has gained notoriety for the roles of Paul onDexter, Jacob on ‘LOST’ and Lucifer on ‘Supernatural’!

Shallow Graves Magazine had the distinct pleasure of sitting down with Mark in 2009, when he was just starting his role of Lucifer on The CW’s “Supernatural”, and we looked forward to catching up on his many adventures since then.

Yvette: First off Mark, I would like to thank you for taking the time to sit down with us for this interview.

Mark: Thank you.

Yvette: So how are you? Speaking with you earlier this week, you stated this was a crazy week for you.

Mark: Good, I have been travelling around more than I have been home. I am still on other time zones other than the west coast and trying to acclimate and as soon as I get used to being back here, I leave the 27th with my wife Tracy to travel to Israel.

Yvette: Are you going for business or pleasure?

Mark: Sort of both actually. The Ministry of Israel has invited me as a Celebrity Embassador, where we will travel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, and through social media we will be doing interviews and tweeting often during our trip.

Yvette: Congratulations! What an honor! How long will you be there?

Mark: We leave on the 27th and return on January 3rd. A little less than a week and it is going to be quite the whirlwind trip. I am looking forward to it but a little apprehensive at the same time. It is the center of a lot of conflict that has been going on, yet it is such a beautiful place, so I have very mixed intense feelings about going.

Yvette: That’s amazing! So for your viewers, while you are there, you will be Tweeting, going Facebook Live, as well as other forms of media? I look forward to following your adventure.

Mark:Yes, we are obligated to advertise liberally on social media during our visit. I am cautious but looking forward to it.

Yvette: Again congratulations. Last time you and I spoke, you were just starting Supernatural as Lucifer, back when my magazine was still in print.

Mark: Wow, yes…I remember. That was a long time ago.

Yvette: Since then , so much has happened. I would like to start if you don’t mind, on your reprisal of Lucifer in Season 11 of Supernatural and I have to ask, while you were in the cage, how much of that was you, and how much was scripted?

Mark: All of the words are scripted, but the behavior is my own.I am always interested in seeing what takes they use. I started an experiment where I did different things each take. The only unscripted dialog I had was a homage to the ‘Samifer’ fan fiction where I say, “Which bunk do you want? Upper, lower, or would you want to share?” Originally it was, “Do you want the top bunk or bottom bunk?” I actually did that in one take and they used it.

Yvette: I like fan fiction and have actually stumbled across a few of those stories.

Mark: I only know about it by reputation, I have not actually read it.

Yvette: You had me on the floor during those scenes. They were just SO GOOD! I hope you don’t mind me saying this, you reminded me of Bruce Campbell!

” t

Mark: (Laughing) Huh! Love that! Thank you. My wife usually sits off camera and watches and she will give me notes in between takes. There were takes that didn’t make the cut but there were takes where she said, “Oh my god, that was like Heath Ledger’s Joker!” She would compare it to certain iconic performances, that was quite badass! I always like experimenting to see what works, or what feels right, and what gets a rise out of Sam (Jared Padalecki), while trying to intimidate him.

Yvette: Personally, I look forward to seeing more of you on Supernatural in the future. If you don’t mind me switching gears, please tell me about “Strangers In A Strange Land”. I see that it was written and directed by your wife Tracy Pellegrino.

Mark: Yes, she came up with it. We were travelling all over the world while making appearances on cons and she wanted to make a project and sort of make use of the free travel with this project. We have always had an interest in the differences of cultural communication that can cause a break down of communication. It was filmed over the course of 8 countries and 12 cities. She enlisted the help of a group of writers in her class and I was one of them. We wrote a few shorts and helped edit them. Tracy directed every single one and had to meet the logistics of every country we were in, pretty much by herself. As a producer, I just pretty much wrote the checks and was a P.A. I made sure everyone was fed and satisfied. It was an extraordinary feat for her, and at the moment it is in post production and once that’s done we hope to show it at some film festivals.

Yvette: Do you have a tentative release date?

Mark: At the moment, we looking at the end of January.

Yvette: Please keep me informed on that. I see you also have another movie coming out titled “High Wire Act”.

Mark: That was actually originally titled “Beirut”. It is a Tony Gilroy script, and the main character is played by Jon Hamm and Rosalind Pike plays the female lead and I play Jon’s best friend and Rosalind’s love interest. It is basically a story about a guy who gets redemption rescuing his friend in 1980’s Beirut. He gets called out of retirement to be a negotiator in my hostage situation. It’s a good action film, it has a lot of intrigue and I think it is going to be a good movie.

Yvette: Are you working on anything right now for T.V.?

Mark: I have a few Super secret projects I will be working on in 2017, two being post apocalyptic video games, which I never done before so that’s exciting.

Yvette: I will be writing about your upcoming conventions in my “Around The World” piece, but would like to ask, do you enjoy doing conventions?

Mark: I have really grown to love the convention scene and meeting and talking to the fans. My con experiences are very different, in I feel like I have a real experience with the fans, not saying other people don’t, but for me it is more than just entertaining the fans and them getting to meet an actor from a show that they like. I like when the conversation, Q & A’s, and VIP experiences turn to topics that matter. My life is sort of tuned to this history, economics, politics, and philosophy. Things that will clear out most parties, are the things I like to talk about. Whenever we get to talk about that, it gets me tuned into the minds and spirits of the fans and in turn they get to know who I am. So it is something I really enjoy!

Yvette: Thank you very much Mark for taking the time to sit with Shallow Graves Magazine. Have a nice holiday and safe flight, I look forward to hearing about your travels.

Mark: You as well and it was my pleasure!
