“Doctor Sleep” The Sequel To Kubrick’s “The Shining”

An interesting and strange choice to say the least, “Doctor Sleep” takes place in the same universe as Stanley Kubrick‘s critically acclaimed horror phenomenon. A universe that the writer of the series, the master of horror Stephen King himself, has gone on record describing that he hates.

Now what is truly interesting about this situation is, the writer and director of the film, Mike Flanagan, actually had to get the go ahead from King, in order to create this production. Mike had a brilliant idea of making the film faithful to the book, while also being set in the same universe as Stanley Kubrick’s film, which was not faithful to the original novel. Stephen King, while writing “Doctor Sleep”, even went out of his way to write and out everything that Kubrick did in his adaptation of the classic horror novel.

The film stars Ewan McGregor, who plays Dan “Danny” Torrance, who is still traumatized by the events that occurred at the Overlook so long ago in “The Shining“. Dan, who still has his psychic powers, has now turned to alcoholism, in fear that he may one day reawaken the past horrors that haunt him. Looking for some way out of his horrific nightmare of a life, Dan knows he won’t find it when he encounters Abra (who is played by Kyleigh Curran). Instantly recognizing that she, as well, shares the same powers that Dan has, Abra seeks his help against a merciless cult that feeds off the psychic energy of children in a hop of gaining immortality.

An interesting and bold choice to have this film be tied to one of the greatest horror films of all time, by one of the greatest directors of all time, Mike Flanagan is taking a leap of faith that he won’t be chewed out by King and Kubrick fans everywhere if this doesn’t go as he plans. Flanagan also has to somehow juggle the changes that Kubrick made, while also keeping to the original source material. So, I guess we will see how that all goes on November 8th, 2019 when the film is released.
