Friday offers attendees the chance to become more than fans with the panel, How to Make a Great Indie Graphic Novel, which gives fans an inside look at what it takes to become a published author and artist. Join Archaia editor-in-chief Stephen Christy and Chief Creative Officer Mark Smylie as they host special guests for an informative panel on what goes into the production of a full-length graphic novel, including the steps from concept to writing, design to production, to self-publishing or submitting your graphic novel for publication. If you’ve ever wanted to know what it takes to make an amazing-looking book, this is the panel to attend! Guests include Michael Lapinksi (Feeding Ground), Jim McCann (Return of the Dapper Men) and David Petersen (Mouse Guard). The panel takes place in Room 1A23 from 2:30pm to 3:30pm.

Also on Friday, Archaia is hosting two exciting off-site signing events attended by Chad Michael Murray, Victor Quinaz and Brent Schoonover.

One Tree Hill’s Chad Michael Murray will be signing copies of his highly-anticipated graphic novel, Everlast at Barnes & Noble (150 East 86th St., New York) beginning at 7:00pm. Everlast follows Derek Everlast, a mysterious man whose destiny in life is to guide mankind on the eve of the apocalypse.

Victor Quinaz and Brent Schoonover, creators of the gritty and groundbreaking Mr. Murder is Dead, will be signing copies at P.S. Bookshop (76 Front St, Brooklyn) from 7:00pm to 9:00pm. Hearkening back to the golden age of comics, Mr. Murder is Dead is a stylistic noir that follows a burnt out detective as he uncovers the truth behind the death of his arch-nemesis. The creators will be back on Saturday when they’re joined by Zachary Quinto (Star Trek), who produced the graphic novel under his company, Before the Door Productions. All three will be available for autographs from 8:00pm to 10:00pm at St. Mark’s Place (11 Saint Mark’s Place, New York).

On Sunday, Archaia is honored to share the legacy of one of the world’s greatest creative visionaries, Jim Henson, in The Early Works of Jim Henson. Jim Henson was a creative genius responsible for some of the most iconic properties today, including The Muppets, Fraggle Rock and The Dark Crystal. But what was he like leading up to that success? Join Archaia and The Jim Henson Company as they explore his early works and creative process, complete with archival, rarely seen footage, brought to you by Henson archivist, Karen Falk. Then, get an advance look at TALE OF SAND, the new original graphic novel coming in November, based on a never-before-seen screenplay written by Jim Henson and his longtime collaborator, Jerry Juhl. Falk, Archaia editor-in-chief Stephen Christy and Tale of Sand artist Ramón Pérez will discuss the behind-the-scenes production of the book and debut some new images! Moderated by Archaia CEO PJ Bickett, the panel will happen from 3:45pm to 4:45pm in room 1A15.

Throughout the weekend, Archaia will host dozens of writers and artists for autograph sessions at their booth, #1546. Check Archaia.com or the booth for a schedule. In addition, Relativity Media, the studio behind the upcoming Immortals film, will host a gallery on the show floor (booth #444) featuring art from the graphic novel prelude, Immortals: Gods and Heroes, including works by Rafael Kayanan, Jock and Scott Hampton.

Tom Morello’s The Nightwatchman To Play Free Concert at New York Comic Con!

On Thursday, October 13th at 7:30PM, Tom Morello as The Nightwatchman, accompanied by the Freedom Fighter Orchestra will take the stage at the IGN Theater at the Javitts Center to play a riveting set for the New York Comic Con Kick-Off Concert.

The Grammy award-winning artist released The Nightwatchman World Wide Rebel Songs on August 30th and has been taking the country by political storm, one city at a time.

“The core of The Nightwatchman is dark matter,” says Tom Morello. “But at the heart of every struggle, there’s hope. So this is an album of rousing hopelessness—it’s part Johnny Cash and part Che Guevara, part beacon light and part arson fire.”

Tom Morello’s graphic novel Orchid, which tells the tale of a 16-year-old street prostitute in a dystopian future, will be released in twelve issues through Dark Horse Comics will be on sale October 12th.  Orchid features a variant cover by the well-known and influential street artist Shepard Fairey, with interior art by Scott Hepburn (Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic).

Orchid is part Suicide Girl, part Joan of Arc, who becomes the Spartacus of Whores in a story that merges the epic scope of Lord of the Rings with the politics of street terrorism.” – Tom Morello

Headlined by DJ Z-Trip, the concert is free to all VIP’s and 4-Day ticket holders BUT seating is first come, first served and will be extremely limited due to size of the auditorium and popularity of the event. Ultimate Access, Special Access and Anime Access VIP ticket holders will be guaranteed to get into the show first; then, 4-Day ticket holders will be let in until the auditorium is full. The concert is open to all 4-Day ticket holders on a first come, first served basis and we cannot guarantee that all 4-Day ticket holders that want to attend the show will be able to get in.

“I’m stoked and honored to be playing alongside Tom Morello at the New York Comic Con. He’s one of my favorite guitarists of all time, and I’ve always admired the level of consciousness he brings to the table. This show is gonna be great. Can’t wait to read his new comic too.” – DJ Z-Trip

Tom Morello is appearing courtesy of Dark Horse Comics, New York Comic Con and Midtown Comics – who will be selling Orchid #1 exclusively at the Kick-Off Concert.

“The world is in flux,” Tom Morello says. “People are standing up and fighting for their rights around the globe. It’s an important juncture we’re at—is anyone going to stand up? The Nightwatchman will stand up, and this is the soundtrack for that struggle.”

In an era of chaos and turmoil around the globe, the voice of The Nighwatchman is needed now more than ever. With so many artists all too willing to abdicate any position of protest and challenge, Tom Morello, and the international concerns of his World Wide Rebel Songs, offer essential tools for the social justice struggles of today.

Tom Morello is a Grammy Award-winning guitarist best known for his tenure with the bands Rage Against the Machine, Audioslave, his acoustic solo act, The Nightwatchman. Tom is also the cofounder of the nonprofit organization Axis of Justice.  The Harvard educated guitarist was ranked #26 in Rolling Stone‘s list of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time”  and has sold over 30 million records.

New Stills from Controversial Sundance Selection THE WOMAN in Theaters 10/14!

The new and controversial horror film THE WOMAN is making waves wherever it’s been screened, and we’re pleased to have some stills from the movie to share with you.  THE WOMAN hits theaters on October 14th, so keep a weather eye and let us know what you think of the movie! Will you be checking it out?

Directed by Lucky McKee, based on the bestselling novel by Jack Ketchum, written Ketchum and McKee by and produced by Andrew van den Houten and Robert Tonino for MODERNCINÉ, THE WOMAN is a disturbing tale of torture and dirty little secrets that can haunt any seemingly harmless neighborhood. The story follows a successful country lawyer who captures and attempts to “civilize” the last remaining member of a violent clan that has roamed the Northeast in the wild for decades, thereby putting the lives of his family in extreme jeopardy.

Starring Pollyanna McIntosh, Sean Bridgers and Angela Bettis, the film prompted furious debates and walkouts during its world premiere in the Park City at Midnight program at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. Reports surfaced of people becoming sick while watching the graphic scenes and one irate Sundance audience member went so far as to say THE WOMAN “ought to be confiscated, burned. There’s no value in showing this to anyone.” Whether a “wonderfully bizarre tale” or an “inhumane degradation of women,” you’ll have to decide for yourself.

Rated R for “strong bloody violence, torture, a rape, disturbing behavior, some graphic nudity, and language” this film is sure to have viewers (and reviewers) squirming in their seats.

Robot6 and other blogs covered the unique giveaway item, and the panties will be handed out (in a limited quantity) throughout NYCC. Corman, who moonlights as a professional belly dancer, has illustrated books on subjects ranging from urban gardening to the history of the skirt, and her work has also appeared in the New York Times and on WNET/Thirteen.
