An Explanation Behind The Darksaber In “The Mandalorian” Season Finale

*Potential Spoiler Warning*

Now to people who are not familiar with the extended universe of the Star Wars Disney canon, you may have been shocked by the fact that Moff Gideon had a lightsaber at the end of the season finale for “The Mandalorian“. I have even heard theories that Gideon is a dark Jedi and a force user, yet I can assure you that is not the case and that this is not the first time the Darksaber has been seen by fans.

The darksaber is an ancient Mandalorian weapon wielded by the first Mandalorian to become a Jedi. The saber is unique in not only its color but also the curvature of its blade, resembling that of a katana blade with a point at the top and a hilt that resembles a normal longsword.

Created by Tarre Vizsla, the first Mandalorian Jedi, the weapon was stored in the Jedi temple after his death. It only saw a resurfacing after it was stolen by clan Viszla during the time of the Old Republic, a period that has yet to be explored by Disney but was fully fleshed out in Star Wars Legends before the purchase of Lucasfilms by Disney. The saber was then passed down throughout clan Vizsla until we first see it in the animated series “Star Wars: The Clone Wars“. Here it was held by the Deathwatch, the group of Mandalorians who saved Mando or Din Djarin from the Separtist attack, leader Pre Vizsla.

The Deathwatch are a group of warrior Mandalorians who cast aside the pacifist intentions of the New Mandalorians, and remained solely loyal to the ancient teachings of violence and warfare taught by the Mandalore. This is the culture you see in “The Mandalorian”.

Pre Vizsla managed to regain control of the planet Mandalorian after tearing down the New Mandalorian ideals and replacing them with the warrior culture of old. That was until a new ruler decided to take control of the planet… Darth Maul. Through a coup, Maul was able to take control over the planet and its people until he met face to face with his old master, Darth Sidious. Sidious killed Maul’s brother and took Maul hostage, leaving the saber behind on Mandalore, only for Maul to escape and flee to the planet Zanbar. There Maul met up with the Deathwatch clan and fought a ferocious battle against General Grevious and his separtist army. Maul continued to use the ancient weapon in several more battles before leaving it on his home planet of Dathomir.

Sabine Wren wielding the Darksaber

During the age of the Empire, a Mandalorian and rebel soldier Sabine Wren retrieved the saber and used it for herself throughout the animated series “Star Wars: Rebels“. After learning how to use the weapon and even winning a duel with it, Sabine gave the weapon over to Bo Katan-Kryze, as Sabine felt that she was the rightful ruler of the Mandalorian people.

From there it is unknown as to how Moff Gideon had gotten his hands on the Darksaber, yet seeming as Gideon is very familiar with the Mandalorian culture, he could’ve gotten it during the Purge of Mandalore by the Empire or even the Night of 1000 Tears. All we know is that this is a very powerful weapon in the hands of the right wielder and could prove to be very dangerous for Din Djarin. But we won’t know until season 2 of “The Mandalorian” is released.
