Everyone Should Have Fun This Halloween!!!
Halloween should be filled with as many haunts and terrors as possible. Of course adults have all the coverage when it comes to movies like Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Halloween, Evil Dead, etc. However,
children seem to be lacking a bit in that department. Most of the haunted houses have turned into fun houses and kids don’t really know anything about the darkness that looms over everyone and everything. So, here are my top 5 picks for movies that both young and old can enjoy.
#5 Extraordinary Tales
Featuring voice talents such as Christopher Lee, Bela Lugosi, and Guillermo del Toro (just to name a few) reading classic Edgar Allan Poe stories such as The Tell Tale Heart, The Masque Of The Red Death, and The Fall Of The House Of Usher (again, just to name a few) with all different types of art and animation, Extraordinary Tales gives viewers all across the board something to enjoy. It has finally hit Netflix so watch it while you can…it will not disappoint.
Any kids movie that starts out making fun of how bad horror films in the 70’s could get is definitely a win in my book. Then throw in some witchcraft, history, and ghosts in a nice New England type setting and you get Paranorman. Also, having actors such as John Goodman, Casey Affleck, and Anna Kendrick lending their voices doesn’t hurt too much either.
Based off of Neil Gaimans book of the same name, Coraline gives children another look at what some of us have always wished for, getting a new and much more exciting set of parents. However, it proves to be much darker than anyone had ever imagined when Coraline is trapped in a completely different world that she now has to fight her way out of. One of the darkest on the list (in my opinion) with a soundtrack that is just as strange, Coraline is definitely a great choice for everyone to enjoy. Plus, there’s a great song form They Might Be Giants in there…
#2 Hocus Pocus
Hocus Pocus went from being a commercial flop to a classic with new fans continuously on the way. Between all the jokes and larger than life characters, what is there not to love. Starring Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Doug Jones in one of his most memorable roles, this is definitely one that everyone both young and old have and will keep close to their hearts.
#1 The Nightmare Before Christmas
Coming in at no.1 (which some of you may be complaining how obvious the choice is), The Nightmare Before Christmas has time and time again proven that it will never die. Filled with a timeless songs (written by Danny Elfman), unforgettable characters, and a great story, I dare someone to give me one complaint about this movie. I mean, it literally has given an unofficial theme song to Halloween! What other movie has done that?! Literally!!! Get your kids on the couch and learn them some Nightmare Before Christmas NOW!!
There are of course more that can be thrown in, but these are the 5 that I think all can enjoy. So, times a wastin! Get your bowls filled with popcorn, settle down with the kids, and enjoy a night of adventure and horror!
Bonus: Over The Garden Wall
Being a mini series that aired on Cartoon Network, it doesn’t quite qualify as a movie. HOWEVER! Over The Garden Wall is a refreshing take on the tales and music of old. If you haven’t watched the 10 episodes yet (that are only 11 minutes in length so it’s basically the length of a film), sit down and enjoy great songs along with actors such as Elijah Wood, Christopher Lloyd, John Cleese, Tim Curry, and Melanie Lynskey lending there voices to other worldy characters, Over The Garden Wall is a rare find in this day in age. You can still find it on Hulu!
