CULT CLASSIC OR CULT CLASS**T
Legend (1985), now here’s an oldie. Recently I received the special directors cut of this movie and decided to do a review on what I think about it. I remember loving this movie as a child and admiring the makeup and practical effects, and still do because they’re amazing, but… oh boy is there a lot I can say about this movie, or can’t say.
Usually I’d try to give a summary of this movie and explain characters but I can’t. There’s no character development or any exposition anywhere. All I know about this movie is that The Lord Of Darkness (Tim Curry) wants two unicorns dead so his only weakness, sunlight, will vanish forever. That’s it. Now, don’t ask me how two unicorns are related to the sun in anyway except for “magic” because I can’t answer that question. I can’t answer any questions about this movie. Nothing is explained and the only things that are explained, are explained by Tim Curry and that’s little to none! It’s ridiculous!
The lack of plot and story isn’t even my biggest problem with the film. My biggest problem with the film is how quick it felt. When I watch a fantasy film, I want to feel like I’ve been on an adventure. I want to feel as though I’m walking across middle earth (Lord of the Rings), or finding a way to kill the kraken (Clash of Titans, original not new), or like I’m sailing with the Argonauts (Jason and the Argonauts), or that I’m trying to help take back Hogwarts (Harry Potter). Any of these would be suitable; however, I don’t want to feel like I’ve just walked into the villains lair and shined a flashlight at him to solve the worlds problems. I just want to have the feeling as though the heroes accomplished something, rather than having them solve the problem in 5 seconds.
In conclusion, I remember loving this movie as a kid because I didn’t need to think but now I notice all the problems with it. The lack of plot, the lack of character development, and the lack of feeling of accomplishment. I just wonder why this movie was made.
