It’s Filled With 70’s Rock and Roll Goodness!!
If you like modern day bands such as The Black Keys, Alabama Shakes, or Nathaniel Rateliff and The Night Sweats, then you are going to love The Sheepdogs! Based out of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, their 2012 self titled record (The Sheepdogs) is an amazing record that mixes the best of 70’s glam with 60’s psychedelia. Think The Grateful Dead meets T. Rex.
The first track on the album “Laid Back” gives a summer time relaxed feeling. It could perfectly sit along side tracks like “Take It Easy” by The Eagles or “Until The Sun Comes” by Rival Sons. The song “Feeling Good” is a perfect call back to the 70’s glam rock of Marc Bolan and Gary Glitter and is a perfect sports anthem.
“Is Your Dream Worth Dying For” almost has a Wings/Boston type flair to it that gives it an amazing pop-rock element. The instrumental “Javelina!” also shows that the band has more than just hard rocking songs to offer.
All in all, The Sheepdogs becomes a melting pot of so many influences. Spanning from the stadium rock sounds of Led Zeppelin to the bluegrass infused jams from The Grateful Dead, there’s something for everyone to love. But they’re not a copy cat band and it’s not a copy cat record. The songs are short and punchy while maintaining a thematic sound throughout the whole album that is stylistically what makes and sounds like The Sheepdogs. I’d recommend taking a break from life and getting lost in their songs as soon as possible. Hell, go out and get the vinyl if you can! It sounds better anyway…
